Kansas City holds a special place in my heart, as it is my hometown. I was born and raised in Kansas and lived there until I needed to experience more. I began learning salsa in Kansas (because of a boy, of course) and I was never that good when I lived there because I was always dancing with the same people and not pushing myself to attend lessons. Since it had been years since I had danced at home, I was rather nervous/excited to attend because I didn’t know what to expect or who I would see from my previous years in the Kansas City salsa scene. Thankfully, I was meeting a girlfriend of mine there (Elisabeth, pictured here) in case I needed any back-up (haha!).
The place was as I remembered it from attending a few times before and I was thankful that I arrived earlier rather than later as the later in the evening gets, the more reggeaton the DJ seemed to play. The first few hours (10:00pm-12:00am) were mainly a mashup of salsa, bachata, and a few sprinkles of merengue. I danced most of the evening and was pleasantly surprised to see some of the dancers that I knew back from when I used to live there. It was a great feeling to finally be able to follow some of the exceptional dancers I remembered from years ago, since in the past all I could handle were the basics!This event is great for salsa dancers and for those who are just looking for a place to dance and drink. The beginning of the night is definitely more tailored for the salsa and bachata lovers (and more serious dancers) out there, however if you arrive around 12:00am you will be happy to find a mix that will please any lover of dance.
